tribalpicturesjapan.com Updated

Well with the two upcoming new film releases and the new version of BLOODSHOT now on my homepage I thought I'd give it a bit of a revamp. So I've darkened all the pages, to reflect my films and made look a little slicker (I hope). I've also added a film stills page.
Check out the new TPJ homepage.

Bloodshot is back!

I'm very pleased to announce that my first film in Japan, BLOODSHOT, is now available on tribalpicturesjapan.com. I got the original movie (mp4 format) converted to WMV (thanks Rob Moreno) so now you can enjoy that whole 28 minute film. But please bear in mind that it's quite a heavy file so it might stick sometimes. Be patient when downloading. To celebrate this occasion here are a few stills from the film.

Quick Flick

Tonight I attended a film event in Roppongi. The Quick Flick event is held around the world and filmmakers can submit short-films on a monthly theme. I went principally to see 2 short films by Rob Moreno (my editor on Bloodshot). It was interesting evening as most of the films were made in South America.

Design Festa in December

I have made my application to Design Festa this weekend. The show is the biggest Arts event in Asia and is held from December 2 - 3 at Tokyo Big Sight in Odaiba.

This is not a film festival but just a chance for me to rent some floor space and show some of my films to the public at large. I will show BLOODSHOT, TENGU, GIRL ALONE and INTERIORS:REDUX and I will also show GIRL ALONE IN FULL COLOUR, but I will be reediting it before then. Some of the edits need tightening up.

I addition I will be making another short film based on a piece of music I have written called GLOOM.

Tengu Editing Finished

Yep, yep yep! Finished editing my 9:00:00 minute music video tonight. It's one of those projects that I really don't want to keep picking away at for too long. The story and the images work for themselves and the think the finished film has a very unique charm. My wife watched a few clips tonight and lets just say it brought a few wry smiles to her face.

So look out for Tengu on September 27th

Tengu 天狗 : Editing 3

Finished off the first edit of Tengu 天狗 this evening.

The images are fitting together very well with Richard Slater's music. All looks nice for now. I have an edit of around 9 minutes and that is unlikely to change as it is dictated by the running times of the 3 songs - Shimmer (Dub Reggae) Reet Wrong (Big Beat) Hatta Ambi 3 (Moody Techno). I love the way the VS Effect exaggerates all the colors, I mean have you ever seen blue sand???? Cool.

Tengu 天狗 : Editing

This morning I started the editing process for Tengu 天狗. I put together a very rough edit and applied 'film grain' effect to complete the VS Effect process. Here are a couple of preview stills.

Tengu 天狗 : Filming

I had a nice afternoon shooting scenes for Tengu 天狗. Seiko Sugimura and I filmed some steps/running scenes around my apartment and then got the train down to Kozu beach where Seiko very bravely walked into the sea fully clothed. What a great stunt girl! That's a wrap for shooting Tengu. Now it's just a matter of getting a bit funky with the editing.

Tengu 天狗 : Update 7

Tomorrow will be the second, and final day of shooting for Tengu 天狗. I will start the editing process this week. So look out for preview stills.

The United Colors Of Filmmakers

It was a kind of hectic week this week (with Girl Alone...). Lots of false starts, false dawns and potentials. I was in contact with a good friend from England, Craig Middleton, who's now living down under in Australia. He's a filmmaker too, and we talked about the possibility of doing some kind of online collaboration. Craig suggested something non-linear. Sounds good to me.

Later in the week I got an e-mail from a Film Director, Martin N Maah, in Cameroon, who wanted my help with some post production work. I couldn't help him out but I'm hoping we can collaborate when he visits Japan next month.

We filmmakers may be in far flung corners of the world but it just goes to show that we all share the same hunger.

On a sadder note, Greg Mitchell, my expert US Navy photographer come GIRL ALONE Director Of Photography, will be leaving Japan next month. Sad to see Greg go as I would have liked to have used his services some more.

Viva filmmakers of the world.

Girl Alone & my love/hate relationship with computers

Today was a bit of a roller-coaster ride to say the least... Yesterday morning Seiko came to my house to begin shooting Tengu. Shooting went well I think and I recorded about 25 minutes of footage (I only need about 3 minutes of this). So I was happy. Then, in the evening I met up with Richard Slater and got the remixed Scorpion Death Rock track. Thanks mate. So I got home and whacked the track onto GIRL ALONE and hey presto! We have ourselves a finished movie. So, it was with much joy that I fell asleep on Monday night.

Hello Tuesday! How quickly things can change. Day 2 of shooting Tengu was cancelled when Seiko got sick on the way over. I was disappointed but decided to use the free time productively and so I began the rendering process (saving the finished film) for GIRL ALONE...or so I thought. My PC refused to save the film and just froze. And a message box with a little yellow warning symbol kept popping up. The message was in Japanese and I had no idea what it was trying to tell me. So, after half a dozen failed attempts I gave up and took my grumpy face to work...anyway after cursing my PC's inadequacies and lamenting my lack of Japanese reading skill I tried again...I wasn't going to be beaten by a machine!

Tuesday evening came...In the evening I did a bit of online research and discovered that all my problems could be solved by simply increasing my computers virtual memory.
I did, and guess what? Yup. It saved. Took 90 minutes to render. So now I love my PC again. Phew.

Now I can concentrate on only Tengu.

Tengu 天狗
GIRL ALONE

This is going to be a big month for TPJ. I will be filming Tengu 天狗 on September 4th, 5th and 10th. Then, time permitting, I will start editing. I will attempt to have the film edited by September 27th.

September 27th will also see the release of GIRL ALONE. That will conclude all my filming and editing for 2006. I want to concentrate on writing the screenplay for BLOODTYPE, with a view to shooting in early 2007.

However, I may produce a few small videos like INTERIORS towards the end of the year, just for fun and to try out some new techniques.
