Tengu : Update 1

I have placed an ad in Metropolis Magazine, that should be appearing this Friday. I'm trying to find an actress to play the very strange role of the 'tengu'. I'm hoping that someone steps forward soon and takes the plunge!
Tengu (天狗) are minor kami or yokai found in Japanese folklore. They are a part of the traditions of most Japanese religions including Shinto and Buddhism, where they are classified as marakayikas. They are sometimes identified with the gods Saruta-hiko, Susanoo, and Karura. Tengu are popular subjects of Japanese art, theater, and literature.

TPJ live Theater

Been a little bit of busy bee today designing and trying to get another page published on tribalpicturesjapan.com. I've added a page called TPJ live Theater. This will give people instant access to my films over the upcoming months. I've already added BLOODSHOT and INTERIORS. Look out for GIRL ALONE, GIRL ALONE IN FULL COLOR and TENGU as they will appear exclusively on the TPJ site (no YouTube for these babies) on or around September 1st. Anyway click here to go straight to the site.

Girl Alone In Full Colour

I am working on a mini documentary called GIRL ALONE IN FULL COLOR. This will also be available from September 1st. I recorded a lot of the meetings and rehearsals and also both days of the shoot - hand-held camcorder style. Also I took some pictures, with my Olympus Oz1, (yes, it's a regular camera, no I don't like digital cameras) and so here are a few samples.

Pic1. Shows Terumi Ezuka and myself sharing a joke between takes. Greg Mitchell is messing with the camera and you can see Kenuske Komori's shaved head in the foreground. Pic taken by Lisa McCaskill.

Pic2. The empty set. Just fascinated by how I managed to create a set within my apartment.

Pic3. Kenuske Komori and Greg Mitchell get ready to film Terumi at the bathroom mirror.

Girl Alone : Editing Situation Update

Gotta say that I hate summer in Japan, so hot and humid, but at least this summer I can enjoy the World Cup. Well, this means that I'm watching games rather than editing GIRL ALONE. A few friends have contacted me this week and asked how the film's coming along, so here is some info.

Latest Status

Release Date: 1st September 2006

I have an edit of around 16 minutes.
I have a basic outline of the music but haven't recorded it yet.
Some sound effects need to be added.

A final cut of the film will be available for viewing at the TPJ Live Theater on tribalpicturesjapan.com from September 1st.

New Project : Tengu 天狗

My next project will be a musical play called TENGU. This will feature the music of Richard Slater and anime style images of a Tengu 天狗 (Japanese mountain demons). This is going to be a very experimental and slightly scary little film.

Girl Alone : Post Production 5

I've always wanted to do a before and after thingy. So here is a shot from a flashback scene with and without the rotascoping style FX.

Girl Alone : Post Production 4

A few months ago I mentioned that I was influenced by manga when thinking about the style of the movie. So with that in mind I have decided to use an effect called film grain on all the flashback scenes. This gives these scenes a look similar to the technique of rotascoping. That was used extensively in The Lord Of The Rings animated film from the 70's. So here is a little teaser picture.

Pink Elephants On Parade

Cube Zero

Watched Cube Zero last night. It's the third in the Cube series. It's got an interesting premise and a nice indie feeling to it. Like the whole 'Do you believe in God?' question that they ask throughout the movie. A gory but interesting experience.

Girl Alone : Post production 3

I realized that T.E was the only one being shown so I decided to add one more still that includes me playing Joe. This will be that last image for a while...the rest is under wraps for now. I now have an edit somewhere between 18 to 19 minutes. Working with that and I'm going to start writing the music. This will be in four sections, like Japanese traditional theatre;

Asa
Gogo
Yoru
Kurai

The music will get steadily darker and more discordant as the film progresses.
